Washing Sand, Sea, and Chlorine Out of Swimwear

How to Care for Your Bathing Suit

Now that summer has arrived, it’s time to slide into your swimwear and hit the beach. Now is a good idea to ask yourself if you really know how to wash your swimsuits. Swimwear can be pricey, especially if you opt for branded beachwear, so it’s natural that you want your pieces to last you a long time. These swimsuit-washing hacks will help you survive beach season so that your suits are ready to go again next year.

Rinse, rinse, rinse.

The most important thing you can do when cleaning a swimsuit is to rinse it off right after wearing it, and then wash it when you get home. This will minimize the amount of time that sand, chlorine, salt water, and sunblock have to sit on the fabric. You’ll want to rinse out both the inside and outside of the suit to rid it of oils from your body, too.

Wash by hand.

The agitation of a washing machine can damage the fabric, even if set on the gentle cycle. The dyes in the fabric are also more likely to run and potentially ruin your other summer clothes. Rinse with water, add soap and gently rub, and then rinse the soap out.

Use a neutral detergent.

You don’t want to use anything too harsh, so stick with something gentle like mild hand soap. Most laundry detergents are far too harsh for most spandex swimwear and will often cause the color to fade, especially on bright-colored clothing.

Don’t wring out your swimsuit.

Although it’s very tempting to do so, don’t wring out your suit, as this is the fastest way to wear out the spandex. Lay it flat on a towel, roll up the towel, and gently squeeze. Remove it from the towel and lay it flat to dry. Avoid letting them dry in the sun, as this can cause the color to fade.

Don’t throw it in the dryer.

The constant tumbling of a dryer combined with the heat can quickly ruin your favorite swim piece. If you need to dry your suit quickly, use your hair dryer. Make sure that it’s set to blow cool air and keep the dryer moving around the swimsuit.
