Tips for Keeping Summer Clothes in Great Condition

Now that the warmer weather is here, it’s the perfect time for a reminder on how you can prolong the lifespan of your summer clothing. As this clothing may be getting a bit of wear throughout the hotter months, it’s best you know how to care for these items so that you can use them wear after wear and year after year.

Keeping Summer Clothes in Great Condition

Tips for washing summer clothes

Always follow the care label of each time. In general, wash each item like the following:

  • Cotton – Use a warm temperature to wash, tumble dry on low, and you can choose to iron cotton clothing on the highest heat setting. As a durable material, cotton can be washing in the machine with any type of detergent and can handle bleach, if required.
  • Linen – As this material becomes softer with each wash, aim to put it on a gentle machine cycle or wash by hand Use a mild detergent and cold water. Linen can be put in the dryer on a low setting but should be taken out while still a little damp.
  • Polyester – The best water temperature for polyester is warm. Use fabric softener to prevent static cling, and dry on a low-temperature setting.

Caring for summer clothes

Generally, summer clothes take a harsh beating. They have to contend with sunblock, chlorine water, deodorant, sweat, insect repellent, grass stains, and more. Because these items are more susceptible to damage and staining, be sure to rinse out stains as soon as possible, and wash often to prevent the build-up of summer grime.
