How to Choose the Best Wash Cycle

Selecting the Right Washing Machine Cycle

Some washing machines come with a wide variety of options to choose from, which can really send your head in a spin. If you regularly throw your laundry in the machine and select the first option that comes up, know that you could be doing more harm to your clothes than good. Choosing the right wash cycle for your clothes can help get them cleaner, make them last longer, and make them look better. Here’s what you should know.

Sort Out the Clothes First

No one loves to spend time sorting their clothes out before washing them, but doing so is an important step in getting them clean. Often, similar-colored materials will require similar wash cycles. Generally, dark clothes should be washed in cold water to prevent the dye from washing out and bleeding onto other clothes. For white material, a warm setting and bleach can help to keep them bright. Start by sorting your clothes into whites, lights, and darks.

Whites

White clothing can benefit from a regular or normal wash cycle with a high speed. This ensures that there’s enough agitation to get your whites thoroughly cleaned. Warm or hot water can aid this process by removing stains. Want the brightest whites? Use a stain stick beforehand and add bleach to the load.

Medium to Delicate Dark Clothes

Dark clothes that are delicate (think dress shorts, dress pants, dress socks, etc.) should be washed using the permanent press cycle. This option gently cleans the clothes using warm water and rinses them in cool water to help the colors stay put. Sturdy garments like jeans can also benefit from this cycle.

Delicates

For delicate sweaters, shirts, undergarments, and more, you should always use the delicate setting to keep your items in the best condition possible. Fortunately, most laundromats have this option, which is gentle enough for these sensitive items. If not, it’s a good idea to hand wash them.

If you are ever unsure about which setting to use for items, talk to your local laundromat attendant. They will be more than willing to help.
