6 Useful Tips to Clean Your Most Delicate Clothes

Many times, we buy pieces of clothing and don’t consider what it’s going to take to keep them clean. While much of what we buy will be easier to take care of, certain fabrics like silk and nylon may require a more delicate touch. If you aren’t sure how to care for a piece of clothing, ask the experts for a few tips. The following list will help.

  1. Read Labels

Read labels and follow directions. Most labels have care instructions that are fairly easy to follow. Most labels are fairly thorough when it comes to providing you with everything you need to know when it comes to caring for your delicate clothes. For some labels, you may need a magnifying glass, but most of the time, you should be able to find all of the information you need. If in doubt, however, dry cleaning is a safe option.

  2. Hand Wash Your Extremely Delicate Clothes

Hand washing your delicate items is the best way to ensure they aren’t damaged. By following the directions on the label when it comes to temperature and actual washing methods, you will be able to safely wash your clothing items if you treat them gently. Hand washing your delicate clothes takes time, but it also ensures that they aren’t damaged or destroyed. When you are hand washing items, make sure the sink you are using has been thoroughly cleaned first.

  3. Treat Stains as Soon as They Occur

No matter what type of fabric is being used, you will have fewer problems removing a stain if you treat it immediately. Even if you don’t plan on washing it right away, treat the stain and get the process started before it has a chance to set in. The sooner you treat a stain, the less chance it has to damage the fabric.

  4. Soak for a Few Minutes

Once you’ve treated a stain, let it soak for a few minutes. Don’t rush it into the washer. If you are using a stain remover, letting it sit for five to ten minutes will give it a chance to work. This will remove most of the stain before you ever put your clothing in the washer. Putting some detergent on the stain as you throw it into your washing machine will give the stain fighters an extra boost.

  5. Dry Flat

Extremely delicate items like silk, nylon, and some forms of polyester must be dried flat. They can’t bear much heat, and hanging them can cause wrinkles or stretching that may become permanent. Instead, lay a bath towel on the counter and place the item to be dried on top; this will keep wrinkles from forming and will make sure your items don’t stretch or pull while it is drying.

  6. Use Your Washing Machine in the Mildest Setting

Some items may be able to withstand the agitation of your washing machine if you put it in the lowest possible setting. Follow the directions on the label when it comes to temperature and speed. Pre-treat, and you should be good to go.
